This course will provide you with the latest evidence on optimal calf rearing strategies using an integrated approach covering aspects of health, behaviours and environmental housing.
It will cover methods for the measurement of calf immunity and how they are associated with outcome measures such as disease and mortality. We will then cover how well UK farms are performing in comparison to current suggested benchmarks.
We will look at the impact the housing environment has on calves, including consideration of how to manage different group sizes from individual and pair housing, through to group housing situations.
We will cover the growing appreciation of how subclinical pneumonia impacts the respiratory health of calves, and how thoracic ultrasound can be used to identify this in practice.
Finally, a fully trained cow signals tutor will cover some of the key youngstock signals that can help you to understand how behaviour can inform you about what your calves are telling you, whether they are getting enough to eat, and if they are growing to meet farm targets.
In this TotalDairy Learning Live session, renowned expert Bart Pardon will explore the latest game-changing advancements in the diagnosis and control of Mycoplasma bovis. Backed by cutting-edge research and real-world insights, this session—sponsored by Zoetis—will equip you with the knowledge and practical strategies to detect, manage, and mitigate the impact of this costly disease.
A hands-on calving course aimed at the new graduate vet in practice.
This course offers new graduates the opportunity to immerse themselves in case discussions about calving. Delegates will also be able to get hands-on calving practice with our state-of-the-art life-size cow simulator model, allowing practice of malpresentations under guidance as well as the use of calving aids. Additionally, a wet-lab session on uterine suturing technique will give the opportunity to practice and hone c-sections skills in a practical manner.
Lung ultrasonography is a game-changer in respiratory health management, become one of the first certified in qTUS in the UK as well as gain knowledge and experience from the worlds best calf thoracic ultrasound specialists
Bovine Thoracic Ultrasound (TUS) is a useful technique, increasing in popularity due to recent recognition that a large proportion of calves may develop subclinical pneumonia only identifiable antemortem with TUS. Practically, the technique can be used to measure the prevalence and epidemiology of respiratory disease, as well as to inform treatment and measure treatment responses. At the herd level, it may be useful when considering the selection of replacement heifers or for screening the health of calves arriving onto new units. Regardless of the TUS method used, interobserver repeatability is only fair-to-poor. This can be improved through practical training and a new course offering a standardised training schedule has been produced by the qTUS farm team at the University of Ghent.
