Beef herd nutrition planning

Day One: 12th October 09:00 – 12:00.

Day Two: 13th October 09:00 – 12:00.

This course will cover the key practical aspects of nutrition and feeding management in the beef herd and highlight how these can be used as indicators of health and performance. It will also include common nutritional issues and how to manage these, as well as case study examples.

Course content:

  • Nutritional terms and overview of rumen digestion
  • Forage and feed evaluation – what to look for on a silage analysis and feed labels
  • Suckler cow nutrition including feed management and troubleshooting alongside case studies
  • Growing and finishing cattle nutrition including feed management and troubleshooting alongside case studies

About the Speaker

Mary Young

Mary studied Veterinary Bioscience at Glasgow University before joining SAC Consulting in 2015. She is a Ruminant nutritionist in the Livestock Specialist Team at SAC and covers all aspects of beef and sheep nutrition. Mary has delivered nutritional workshop and training sessions to vets, farmers and consultants, these sessions are practical and theory based and provide a better understanding of nutritional needs of the beef herd. Mary specialises in forage evaluation and ration formulation and has been involved in rationing software development and is a member of the industry advisory led group in the Feed into Beef research project which is currently reviewing and updating the nutritional requirements of beef cattle in the UK.
